New Life

John 10:14-18 NRSV:I am the good shepherd. I know My own and My own know Me, just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father. And I lay down My life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to My voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of My own accord. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it up again. I have received this command from My Father.

Jesus in this passage is foreshadowing and describing His death and resurrection using a “sheep” and “shepherd” metaphor. He states that He would die for His sheep and will be taken up again in order to create one flock that Jesus often referred to as the Kingdom of God.

The Gospel, the good news of Jesus, the message of Easter is so much bigger than often we realize. Easter and the resurrection speaks of a world reborn. Easter and the resurrection speaks of reconciliation and redemption.

Theme: Jesus brought new life to the world and Jesus can bring new life to you and me.

Reflection Questions

  • Where in your life do you need God’s living water to bring new life?
  • Where in your life do you need to be lifted up by your Shepherd?
  • Are you running away from your Shepherd/Savior or are you running towards Him?
  • Is your faith dormant or is it ready to rise?
