“Stand Firm”

I believe we live in a Spiritual World where there is a Chief Enemy and there are spiritual forces at play in the world. Now I do not look at every problem I have as a result of Satan. But it would be naïve of me not to think there is evil and there are spiritual forces at play.

Theme: Paul is telling us in this passage to stand firm and to persevere.

According to Gregory Boyd, the general assumption of the Old and New Testament is that the earth is engulfed in cosmic forces at play. There is evil in this world, and there is a sense in Scripture that the days before Jesus’ return will be marked by a greater reign of evil, and individuals on behalf of Satan will persecute those who follow Christ.

The grand finale of the Gospel is that there is a sure hope for the future. It is grounded in the word of Jesus, that one day evil will be no longer, Jesus will return in glory, and justice will prevail and Jesus will gather His own.

Luke 10:17–19 NRSV: The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, in Your name even the demons submit to us!” He said to them, “I watched Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you.

While this chapter is often quite hard to understand and even harder to apply to our lives, I do believe it is given to us for a very specific reason: to prepare followers of Jesus to stay faithful to Jesus no matter what happens, to stand firm.
